Abstract :

HP's new ScanJet IIc is a 24-bit color scanner that provides resolutions of up to 400 dpi along with better speed and quality than previous HP scanners. The product has a maximum scanning area of 8.5 x 14 inches and has a slightly larger footprint than previous ScanJet models. Its case has both 25- and 50-pin SCSI ports as well as a conversion cable for linking the machine directly to the Mac or anywhere in the SCSI chain. Software that checks SCSI addresses is provided, along with scanning software. Custom installations under both System 6 and System 7 are possible using the Apple Installer program; the ScanJet can be used on any Mac Plus or later machines with at least 2 Mbytes of RAM. The ScanJet IIc can scan images in 8- or 24-bit color and 4- or 8-bit gay scale in one pass for best registration of the red, green and blue components of a color image. It includes the new 'AccuPage' technology for improving optical character recognition quality on hard-to-scan documents such as discolored pages or newspapers, but no Mac scanning software yet supports AccuPage. HP is working with Caere Corp on AccuPage support in Caere's OmniPage Professional. HP's own DeskScan software is powerful and easy to use; the DeskScan II version provided with the IIc has many improvements, but its System 7 compatibility is limited.
