Abstract :

HP and Caere Corp jointly announce new scanning and optical-character recognition (OCR) software products designed to work together and provide an inexpensive system for incorporating scanned text into documents. Caere's OmniPage Direct is an OCR package for Microsoft Windows and Apple's System 7 that lets users insert text directly into documents using HP's new ScanJet IIp and other scanners. The ScanJet IIp is a low-priced flatbed scanner for the Macintosh and IBM PC that can recognize 256 gray scales at 300 dots per inch (dpi) resolution. It will sell for $1,095 for the Mac version and $1,295 for the PC and Micro Channel versions; OmniPage Direct will be priced at $595. OmniPage Direct lacks the graphics-recognition, spelling checker, verification and customization features of Caere's high-end OmniPage Professional. It adds a Scan Text menu item to any System 7 or Windows 3.0 text application for automatically importing text.
