Abstract :
The supernatural monkey hero Sun Wukong in the 16th-century Chinese novel 'Xiyou ji' ('Journey to the West') may have originated in a legend concerning Huili, founder of the Buddhist monastery Lingyin si, where monkeys were actually raised. The Huili legend became widespread during the Song period, just before the figure of Sun Wukong first appears. Both tales associate monkeys and Buddhist piety, and both monkeys are supernatural beings who live in caves by magic mountains. Both tell stories of fantastic journeys ending in the Buddhist paradise, although the journeys are in different directions.
