Abstract :

Caere Corp's OmniPage Direct scanning software works very well with HP's ScanJet IIp gray-scale scanner to provide an optical character recognition (OCR) system. The combined package is relatively inexpensive and easy to use. OmniPage Direct works from inside an application and can automatically recognize portrait or landscape orientation. When used with the ScanJet IIp the software also helps adjust brightness and contrast levels. OmniPage also works with other scanning devices, but HP has licensed its AccuPage technology to Caere for this software. Direct does not include a spelling checker, deferred scanning, a graphics editor or the ability to learn new symbols. The 300-dpi, 256-level gray-scale scanner flatbed scanner is easily installed and can be purchased with an optional sheet feeder. The software costs $595 or $300 when purchased with the scanner. The scanner costs $1,095.
