Abstract :

The Syrian-backed Lebanese government's decision to implement the 1989 Ta'if Agreement resulted in the election of a new parliament in 1992. A study covering 1436 respondents, conducted by the newspaper al-Safir in the summer of 1992, showed that the majority of the Lebanese felt the 1992 elections would have the same results as the 1991 elections. The Muslim population of Lebanon supported the 1992 elections, but the Christians sought to postpone them. The problems facing a democratic electoral process and the political awareness of the Lebanese population and future Lebanese leadership are discussed.
