Abstract :
Friendly societies and fraternal orders should be considered as an alternative to the proposed national health insurance plan. Fraternal orders provided for the insurance needs of their members prior to the advent of the welfare state in the US. A return to the concepts of mutual aid, kinship and autonomy would be a welcome change from the welfare state system that has instituted bureaucratic dependancy.
