NEW YORK -- That squeaking noise across the grounds of the U.S. Open these first two days? It's not just rubber on cement. Some young American men are finally making noise.
On Monday, wild cards Donald Young, 18, and John Isner, 22, scored impressive first Grand Slam wins.
Young, a heralded teen from Atlanta, beat Chris Guccione of Australia 6-7 (2-7), 6-3, 6-2, 6-3. Isner, a Greensboro, N.C., native who turned pro in June after leading Georgia to the NCAA championship, upset No.26 seed Jarkko Nieminen of Finland 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.
Another wild card, Wayne Odesnik, 21, had a five-set win Tuesday against Danai Udomchoke of Thailand -- Odesnik's first win in three trips to New York.
"This is the most optimism we've had in a while with some young guys," U.S. Davis Cup captain Patrick McEnroe says.
Isner plays qualifier Rik De Voest of South Africa today for a possible shot at top seed Roger Federer in the third round.
