Abstract :

Stephen Foster's songs came to be regarded as the epitome of nostalgia for his contemporaries during the mid-19th century and even among the music loving public of the 20th century. This nostalgia is seen from both a historical context and the melodic structure he used in his works. Foster's ballads are basically pentatonic in character, resembling old Celtic music, and use the chorus verse as an emotional high point.
