Abstract :

HP's new ScanJet 4c scanner is a 30-bit unit that delivers higher-quality output than the earlier 3c, but is relatively expensive at $1,179; HP has not lowered its prices as have competitors. Those with demanding needs will find the unit's high output quality worth the price. The scanner uses the extra bits of color data for each RGB hue to generate optimized 24-bit images and has an active scanning area that can accommodate legal-size pages. It remains simple to use and surprisingly fast, generating 300-dpi color scans two to three time as fast as its predecessor and 600-dpi scans in about 30 seconds. HP's impressive DeskScan II control/driver software is TWAIN-compatible and now supports Windows 95. The ScanJet 4c also comes with Visioneer's excellent PaperPort 3.0 tool for managing scanned documents, Corel's PhotoPaint 5 image editor and Caere's OmniPage LE OCR software.
