Abstract :
Seven low-cost personal laser printers are reviewed. All work with Windows 95, include at least 256KB of RAM and cost $499 or less. Most of the printers perform rasterization on the host PC to keep costs down. Host-based implementations generally provide a more flexible set of driver features than traditional printer-language architectures; many support advanced capabilities such as manual duplexing, N-up printing, booklet printing and watermarks. HP's LaserJet 6Lse uses full host-based processing; most of the other printers use either GDI translation or a combination of techniques. The HP is the most expensive printer in the group at $400 and is not outstanding in performance, but generates the best overall output quality. NEC's SuperScript 860, priced at $393, is the only printer that performs its own rasterization and is faster than any other unit tested.
