Feb. 14--A funny thing happened one night last October at Cranefield's VFW on East Lakeside Street. A couple of retirement-age guys got up on stage with acoustic guitars. There was little fuss. Nobody knew them. But as they continued playing, a few people at the bar got puzzled looks on their faces. "Wait a second," someone said. "Aren't you ... ?" another began. Before long, more than one patron had a cellphone to an ear, letting a friend know that two members of the most legendary bar band ever to come out of Madison were back in town and playing music. Al Craven and Bob Kenison had purposely kept the gig quiet. They weren't quite sure what to expect of themselves, or an audience. Dr. Bop and the Headliners, the band that made them famous, was a distant memory. Still, the duo, calling themselves Those Weasels, included a bit of Dr. Bop material in their set. Some Buddy Holly and Elvis, and "Chantilly Lace" for sure. The folks at Cranefield's loved it. It went well enough that Craven, 67, and Kenison, 68, who live in North Carolina and New York, respectively, are back in Madison for the next 10 days or so, playing three public shows as Those Weasels.
