In the last few years, new and important scholarship in women's history has emerged in line with the growing interest in gender studies stirred by the emergence and institutionalisation of a Romanian feminism in academia. (1) Women historians have become increasingly interested in recovering the history of women's condition and feminism in Romania. Probably the most influential work in this context is that of the historian Stefania Mihailescu. After many years of research, she gathered an impressive number of documents on 'the woman question' and the feminist movement in Romania, which were published in two collections: the first, covering the period 1815-1918, in 2001, and the second, a revised edition of the first and covering the period 1838-1929, in 2002. In the introduction to these two editions, largely identical, Mihailescu outlines the main characteristics of women's economic, legal, and political status for the period covered by documents. She also offers her interpretations of the origins of feminist activism in Romania and the ideological nature of Romanian feminisms. (2)

Mihailescu's work stimulated the interest of other Romanian feminists in recovering the historical traditions of feminism in Romania. Mihaela Miroiu, a well-known Romanian feminist philosopher and the initiator of the first Romanian graduate program for gender studies in Bucharest, has played an important role here.
