Therewould be many terrible things about being unlawfully jailed in Alabama. Sleeping on a smelly mattress in the heat. Attending the hokey inmate's church group. The lack of a powerful literary device with which to protest your innocence. But one thing's for sure, the "open letter" protesting innocence is no longer any use.

Hardly a moment goes by now without some class of open letter being brought to your attention on social media. Some are cheerful in tone, others brutal, but the goal is clear: to hold someone accountable. People are being publicly admonished at an unprecedented rate. Sinead O'Connor's missive to Miley Cyrus was the first of recent times to be widely shared. Now everyone, from celebs to plebs, is hosting a personal unburdening party and we're all invited.
