Abstract :

Corn has retained a religious context throughout its history in America. The Aztecs and Incas used corn in the form of bread as a connection to the divine, while Puritan settlers viewed the harvest as a time of thanksgiving. The mouth, and eating, were considered sacred, and corn as a staple played a key role.
