Abstract :

The practice of medicine has been shaped through the years by advances in the area of diagnostic procedure. Many of these advances were made possible by scientific breakthroughs made before the 20th century. The most notable of these breakthroughs include the development of microscopy, the invention of the thermometer and the stethoscope, the creation of blood tests, the establishment of hygienic laboratories and the invention of the vacuum flask and the dry-plate photographic process.
