The first queer sex scene I read as a teen was in a book for adults. Mercedes Lackey's Magic's Pawn made me feel like someone was whispering a secret in my ear--yes, gay people have sex. Yes, your desires are normal.
In the U.S. today, sexual education is waning. Many counties and schools have gone all the way back to the level of education last seen in the 1980s--variations of abstinence-only or scare tactics with graphic shots of STIs and unwanted pregnancies. Even in more liberal areas, sex education often just consists of a biology class and a round of putting condoms on bananas. Organizations such as Advocates for Youth are trying to fight back against these archaic and often damaging sexual-lack-of-education scenarios, but we still see the harm being done: unwanted pregnancies, the rise of STIs, sure; but more important, teenagers often turn to pornography for their "education." In a survey already 10 years old, 93 percent of men and 62 percent of women said they'd seen pornography before turning 18. With porn becoming even more prevalent online, I'm assuming those numbers have gone up.
