Abstract :

Apple's Macintosh is more receptive to the use of scanners in business than IBM PCs and compatibles because players in the Macintosh market are more willing to experiment with new technologies than their counterparts in the PC arena. The Macintosh is a success in the business microcomputer market in large part because of Apple's LaserWriter laser printer and Aldus Corp's Pagemaker desktop publishing package. These two products provided a new level of integration, control, and speed in creating documents for large and small businesses alike. Desktop publishing is taken a step further by scanning technology, which provides an even higher level of speed, control, and integration. Hewlett-Packard is expected to enter the Macintosh scanner market very soon, and Apple reportedly is preparing to introduce a scanner in the first half of 1988. The Macintosh scanner market is analyzed.
