Perry extends tactics to Illinois
PONTIAC, Mich.--Perry Drug Stores is using the same format and philosophy to penetrate the Illinois market that it used in its home state of Michigan. That philosophy includes convenient locations, competitive pricing, a good merchandise mix and customer service. "These have been Perry's strengths throughout its history," says a company spokesman. "We are behind Walgreens and Osco in the market, but we can compete with these leaders by emphasizing our strengths. That's the way we compete with others in Michigan --by doing what we do best."
"We're positioned where we want to be in Chicago, as well as in all of our other operating areas," says vice president of corporate communications Berl Falbaum. "There are no major plans to expand anywhere, or to have any major diverstitures."
Indications are, however, that the 219-unit chain, which is the leading drug chain in Michigan, might be re-evaluating its position in the highly competitive Chicago market. Reports from Chicago show that Perry is looking to find subtenants...
