ANAHEIM ANGELS Look for Brad Fullmer to get most of the starts at DH, with Shawn Wooten filling in against lefthanded pitchers. Fullmer, a lefthanded hitter, relies heavily on rhythm and timing at the plate. He did not feel comfortable last season until September, when he led the team with a .378 average. Defensively, he's limited, able only to play first base. ROTATION ANALYSIS: The quintet of LHP Jarrod Washburn and RHPs Ramon Ortiz, Kevin Appier, John Lackey and Aaron Sele is solid, provided Sele has fully recovered from last season's shoulder problems. LHP Scott Schoeneweis, converted to a reliever last season, also can start. Washburn has a history of wearing down late in the season, a result of throwing too many pitches. Ortiz has the best arm in the rotation but struggles to maintain his composure. Appier relies on command and intelligence because he can't overpower hitters. Lackey has good stuff and doesn't get rattled. Like Appier, Sele needs to have good command, and he relies heavily on his defense.--Joe Haakenson

BALTIMORE ORIOLES The team has not budged from its initial offer to free-agent C Ivan Rodriguez--three years and about $18 million. With no known competition for Rodriguez's services, the team is content to wait for the 10-time All-Star to lower his asking price, believed to be three years at $11 million to $12 million per year. ROTATION ANALYSIS: Omar Daal is the first full-time left-hander in the rotation since Jimmy Key in 1998. Daal is a six inning pitcher who needs to go deeper into games. RHP Rodrigo Lopez must prove he can repeat his rookie success. RHP Sidney Ponson needs to develop more focus and maturity. RHP Jason Johnson must avoid injuries and improve his focus. RHP Scott Erickson has not been the same since elbow surgery in 2000 and now has a torn labrum. Lopez, Daal and Ponson are the current top three, and Johnson is a fairly safe bet at No. 4. Erickson, RHPs Pat Hentgen, John Stephens and Sean Douglass and perhaps RHP Rick Bauer will compete for the remaining spot or spots. The team might also trade a starter--most likely Ponson or Johnson--to open up a position in the rotation.--Dave Sheinin

BOSTON RED SOX Stymied thus far in its attempt to add a starting pitcher, the team may wind up pursuing free-agent LHP Kenny Rogers. The team also has interest in DH/1B David Ortiz as a first baseman and wants to add a righthanded hitter for the bench. ROTATION ANALYSIS: RHPs Pedro Martinez and Derek Lowe form an enviable 1-2 combination, but a strong No. 3 starter is needed, and the bottom of the rotation must become deeper. Martinez's shoulder probably will remain a concern for the rest of his career, but there is zero anxiety at the moment from the club or Martinez.
