There was a case for developing London's Underground further to cater for the 200,000 extra dailv commuters expected in the next 15 years, it was said yesterday by Mr. Anthony Bull, new vice-chairman designate of the London Transport Board.
Mr. Bull. who is chairman of the passenger transport plannirng committee, was speaking soon after yesterday's announcement that the Minister of Transport had appointed him vice-chairman to Mlr. A. H. Grainger, who goes on September 30
Mr. Bull said a possible new Underground route, the Fleet Line, was very much a tentative scheme by the planning comniittee. It would run from Baker Street to Bond Street, Trafalgar Square, the Strand, Fleet Street, Ludgate Circus and Cannon Street. and then to the, south-east suburbs.
After the Victoria Line was completed, the most heavily loaded section would be between Oxford Circus and Baker Street. Between Bond Street and the City, the suggested new line would run rottghly parallel to the Central Line and the District Line and so relieve those line.
There were many snags. The financial problem was huge. The preliminary work would take about four or five vears before any building work could begin.
Possible extensions to existing Underground routes would be of the Aldwych line to Waterloo and the new Victoria line to Brixton.
Mr. Bull joined the Underground group of companies in 1929. In 1955 he became a member of the former London Transport Executive and in 1962 a member of the London Transport Board.
