DEATH OF COLONEL EGrRTOX LEIGH, M.P.-We baveto annouuce the death, on Saturday forning, of Colonel Egerton Leigh, 31.P. for the Mlid-Division of Cheshire. Ibe deccased gentloman was the only sou of the late Mr. Egerton Leigh, of WVost-hall, in High'Loigh, Cheshire, by M'ilholmina S.-rah, daughter of tho lato 'Mr. George Stratton, of Tcw-park, Oxford. Tho lato mcmber was descended from Richard do Lymine, who, in the 1atttr part of the 13th century, married Agnos, daughter and sole heir of Richard de Legb, great grandson of liamon do Legh, the first mentioncd in the pedigree. 'Mr. Leigh, who was born in 1$15, was cducated at EtOD, and atterwards 'uterec the Akrmy as Cornet in the Queen's Bays. Ho retired froum the serrico, witih tho rank of Captain, in 1843 but wa.Ls Major of the 1lt Cheshire Light Infantry 3tiliti_ for 20 years. lie Tws High Sheriff of Chc-hire in l872, nad was tbo author of " 3alladls and Legends of Cheshire." Colonel Leigh was first elected member for the Mid. Division of Cheshire in 173, and at tho last clection, in I as rc-el-cted, in conjunction with the Hon' Wiibrnham Egerton, wlithout opposition. He was a staunch Conservative, and in favour of thiu union of Church and litato; also of secular and religious education being combined, and of economy in tho pubtic expenditure. The Late Colonel married, in 1842, Lydia Rachel, daughter and co-heir ot Mr. John Smitb IN righlt, of Bulcotc-lodge, N,otts.
M=thOFOLITAo BOArD OF WoP.X..-The usual mieeting of tlie Metropolitan Board of Works wras held on Friday at the otlice in Spring-gardons, Mr. G. B. Richardson (in the absence of Sir J. X. Hogg) in the chair. A revort was presented from tbo Vorks and General Purposes Committee, stating that " the Committeo have considered the memorial from th- Lewisbam District Board, on the subject of a lublic recreation ground, proposed to be provideurf or the *tistricts of Sydenham and 1Forest-hill, and recommending that the Board do contribute one-half the cost of the lanad proposed to be acquired on condition that the District Board do enclose, lay out, and keep tho ground in order, in p erpetuity, such contribution not to excced thcsum £4,25, and that it be paid to the District J)oard on a certificate by the archuitect of this Board of the comrpletion of the work, andI by the accouutaut of the net cost of the same." Mr. legg moved the adop)tiou of the repcrt, and said it was conlsifired desirable that this land should be obtained, as tho ncighbourhood was a groving one, and the land vould be retained in perpetuity as a recreat.on ground.
