Sir William Taylor. C.B.E.. formerlv Director-General of the Forestry Commission. died on Sunday at the age of 86.

A Forestry Commissioner from 1938. he was born in May, 1882. and educated for the land agency profession, holding the Forestry Diploma (prizeman) of the Royal Instituze of Chartered Surveyors. He entered the public service in 1910 and was engaged in timber supply and forestry work from 1916. He joined the stall of the Forestry Commission at its inception in 1919. serving in variouas canacities in the field, as Assistait Commissioner for England and Wales, and finally as Forestry Commissioner and Director General.

He was president of the Society of Foresters of Great Britain in 1936-38 and was an honorary Fellow of the Society. From 1939 to 1942 he was Commissioner in charge oef Home Timber Prodution, England and Wales. Since 1954 he had been chairman of the Standing Advisory Committee on Planting in Royal Parks. Ministry of Works.
