Sir Arthur Gosling, KBE, CB, FRSE, FRICS, who died on August 8 at the age of 81 was Director-General of the Forestry Commission from 1948 to 1962.

Arthur Hulin Gosling was born on July 26, 1901 and educated at Bell's Grammar School, Coleford, Glos, from where he went to study at the Forestry Commissioners' School for Foresters.

Later he went to Edinburgh University and took a degree in Forestry. He was appointed a District Officer

with the Forestry Commission in 1928. He was subsequently Divisional Officer, Glasgow from 1938, Assistant Commissioner for Scotland from 1940 and became Deputy Director of the Forestry Commission in 1947, succeeding to the director generalship in the following year.

After his retirement he was, from 1963 to 1972 Chairman of the Commonwealth Forestry Association. He had been appointed CB in 1950 and was created KBE in 1955.
