Mr. James Macdonald. C.B.E.. deputy director general of the Forestry Commission, died yesterday at the age of 64.

He was educated at Blairgowrie Hizh School and took a degree in forestry at Edinburgh University. He joined the Forestry Commission in 1924 and for some years was engaged in research, being at one time on the staff of the Imperial Forestry Institute, Oxford. In 1946-48 he was a conservator of forests on the staff of the director for Scotland and he was then appointed director of research and education. He had recently succeeded Sir Henry Beresford-Peirse as depuht directorgeneral of the commission on the latter's appointment as dire:tor-general.

Macdonald was a past President of the Tnternational Union of Forest Research Organizations. He married in 1933 Zoc daughter of Ronald Sinclair, of Edinburgh. who survives hiin with two sons and a daughter.
