Sir David Cardwell, KCiS, who had been Chief of Defence Procurement, Ministry of Defence, since 1980, died on June 19. He was 61.
After Dulwich College and London University he joined the Royal Aircraft Establishment in 1942. Subsequert
appointments included those at Ministry of Supply Headquarters and at the Military Vehicles and Engineering Establishment before he became Chief Scientist (Army) and a Member of the Army Board, MoD in 1976.
Before becoming Chief of Defence Procurement he was, from 1978 to 1980 Director of the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment.
He had been appointed CB in 1974 and was created KCB in 1981.
He married, in 1948, Eileer Tonkin, daughter of Dr J: F. Kitt. They has a son and a daughter.
