Dr. Corydon Wassell died at his home at Little Rock, Arkansas, on Monday. He was 74. He was born in Arkansas and there practised as a country doctor for some time before going to China as a medical missionary. In 1942 he was a Lieutenant-Commander, U.S.N.R., in Java acting as liaison officer to a Dutch hospital in which lay some 40 American sailors, almost all seriously wounded. Wassell. a man whose compassion was matched by his courage and resource, finally succeeded in getting a handful of the sailors to Fremantle and safety. He was awarded the Navy Cross and his conduct was praised by President Roosevelt in a broadcast. Subsequently the story of the evacuation was the subject of a book by the late James Hilton, and in 1944 the book was made into a film, The Story of Dr. Wassell, with Mr. Gary CooPer in the leading part.
