The Vice-Chancellor is 'advised that the election of Dr. Seward as Vice-Chancellor on Tuesday was rendered void by the absence of the Junior Proctor and his deputy. The Vice-Chancellor accordingly gives notice that the names of the two persons nominated for the office by the Council of the Senate will be published to the Senate to-morrow, and that the election will be held in the Senate House on Saturday from noon till 2 p.m.

The following research'students have been approved by the Board of Research Studies for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy:H. Robinson (Trinity) and N. P. Chakravarty and T. Deighton (non-colegiate).

The Board of Research Studies have also approved for the title of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Miss K. M. Wiison, reseaich student, of Newnham College, who submitted a dissertation entitled " Music and English Poetry."

31r. Cyril Batho, D.Sc., has been appointed Professor of. Civil Engineering in place of Professor F. C. Lea, D.Sc. (resigned). Professor Batho was sometime Fellow of the University of Liverpool, where he"graduated B.Eng. in 1904 and B.Sc. (Mathematics) in 1905. He ioined the staff .of the ,McGill University, Montreal, in 1907, graduated D.Sc. in 1917, and since 1919 has been Associate-Professor of Applied Mechanics and Hydraulics there. He assisted in the buildir.g of the Quebeo Bridge (1912-1'3).

It is officially. announced that the aim of the Iniversity in creating the new Readership in Geography, an appointment to which will be made in the near future, is to secure the sound and' broad teaching of gceography primarily in its human aspects and in close' relation to the historical, economic, and political development of man in society, inclusive of the necessary influence of physical facts and cnvironment on that development. The Reader will be a member of the Faculties of Arts and Commerce, and will be responsible for the control of the Department of Geography involved in the creation of the new Readership, as well as for any further development in the teaching of geography afterwards required by the University.

At a recent meeting of the Council, Mr. J. C. Burkill, B.A., was appointed to the Chair of Pure. Mathematics for a period of five years as' from' October 'I, 1924. Mr. Burkill, whlo is 24 years of age, was educated at St. Paul's School and Trinity College, Cambridge. He was elected a.Senior Scholar of the College and Abbot Scholar of the University. In 1921 he was awarded a First Class in Part II. of the Mathematical Tripos, with the special marks of distinctior. In 1922 lie was elected Allen Scholar-of-the University, and later a Fellow of his College. In 1923 lie was awarded one of the two Smith's Prizes of the University for a thesis. He is at present acting as Director of Studies at Trinity Hall and FitzwllMiam Hall, Cambridge.
