Colonel Sir Henry Streatfeild,G.C.V.O., C.B., C.M.G., Extra Equerry to the King, and former Private Secretary to Qucen Alexandra, died at his home at Chiddingstone, Edenbridge, Kent, on Monday night. He was a Grenadier Guardsman, distinguished by the personal appointments he held in the Royal Household and on the staffs of prominent commanders and administrators He saw a considerable amounit of active service in the South African War.
He was the eldest son of Colonel Henry Dorrien Streatfeild. of Chiddingstone. in Kent. which has becn the hionie of the fainity since the beg;nning of tile sixteenth century. and was horn there on January 4, 1857. Educated at Eton. he entered the Grenadier Guards throughi te Militia (24th Foot, now The South
Wales Bordcrers) on August 20. 1876. He was a typical Guardsman in appearance, and was soon to prove himself thc pcr-fcct A.D.C. It, this capacity he accompanied the Marquess of Lansdowne to Canada when the latter became Governor-General in 1883. Less than two ycars later he became Militarv Secretary, and when Lord Lansdowne was UfSmade Viceroy of. India Captain Streatfeild-lic had been promoted in 18.5-continuicd in his suite as A.D.C. intil 1891.
In the following year lie became A.l).C. lo Lord Houghton (now Lord Crewe)t, ILor(d _icutenant of Ireland, gettinig his major-ity in July, 1893. Iiaving comie uni(ler thc notice of Lord RobLrt's, theni comnmtnandinig the Forces in Ireland, he went to him as his Assistant Military Secretary ;n 1895, and hield this appointment until the outbreak of thc Soutil African War in 1899. As the quickest way of getting to thtc front Major Streatfeild became A.D.C. to Lord Methltic, whose fortunes lie followed in thc advance towards Kimberley, itieltucing ihc actions of Belmont, Enslin, Modtler River, and Magersfontein, in the Oranige Frec State operations from February to May2 1900, and later at Lindley and Rhenoster River; and also in the Transvaal, where Lord Mctiluen's coltimns were in action with Dc Wet at Venterskroon in August. Major Streatfeild was mentioned in dispatches ad(l promoted lieutenant-colonel. At the end of 1900, when Lord Roberts left South Africa for home to become Commanderin-Chief of the Army, his former Assistant Military, Secretary also returned and served as his Private Secretary during three difficult years at the War Office, 1901 to 1904. In 1902 Lieutenant-Colonel Streatfeild was made M.V.O., and in February, 1904, was promoted brevet-colonel. He retired from the Army in May, 1904.
|He was appointed Equerry to King Edward VII in 1908. and on the accession of King George V was made an Extra Equerry, at the same time joining the household of Queen Alexandra as Equerry and Private- Secretary. These offices he held until 1925, being created C.B. in 1911 and C.V.O. in 1912. From 1914 to 1919 Colonel Streatfeild was LieutenantColonel commanding the Grenadier.
