Sir Eric Machtig. GCMG, KCB, OBE, who was Permanent Under-Secretary of State for Commonwealth Relations from 1940 to 1948, died yesterday.

Machtig was born in 1889. He was the son of Mr F. G. Machtig. He was a Scholar at St Paul's School. and at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he took a first in the Second Division Classical Tripos in 1911. He also attended the Sorbonne.

He entered the Colonial Office in 1912, transferring to the Dominions Office (later the Commonwealth Relations Office) as Assistant Secretary in 1930. In 1936 he was appointed Assistant UTnder-Secretary of State

in 1939 Deputy Under-Secre-

taly; and the following year Permanent Under-Secretary. In 1948 he was seconded for special duties. He retired in 1949.

Machtig was made CMG in 1935, KCMG in 1939, and GCMG in 1948. He was created OBE in 1926 (MBE 1918), and KCB in 1943.

He was a director of Barclays Bank DCO from 1949 to 1969; chairman of the working committee of the Lord Mayor's National Thanksgiving Fund in 1950; chairman of the Sister Trust from 1950 to 1965: and a vice-chairman of the Victoria League from 1950 to 1962.

Machtig married in 1941 Nodiah arguerite Friend ; she died in 1943.
