Ten Italian warshlips. the battleships Italia and Vittorio Vencto. the cruisers Eugenio di Savoia, Duca d'Aosta, Raimondo Montecuccoli, and Luigi Cadorna, and four destroyers arrived here from Malta this mornin,.

Tht3 ships appeared on. the horiz6n about 8 o'clock and British warships could be made out leading the Italian ships under the command of Rear-Admi-al Olivia, flying his flag in the Eugenio di Savoia, and followed by cruisers aiid destroyers, with our destroyers abreast. Admiral Cunninghat, Commander-inChief, Levant, and other senior officers. with the Greek Commander-in-Chief, were there to meet them.

SUICIDE OF MARSHAL.

CAVALLERO

The German-contiolled Rome wireless announced. yesterday tlhat Marshal Ugo Cavallero had committed suicide ' because he could not bear the dishonour of the shameful betra:al of his country."

Cavallero. who was one of the Fascists put under arrest by the Badoglio rdgime, was recently liberated' by German troops. In January, 1941, he was appointed Chief of the General Staff. Last January Rome Radio announced that he had resigned " at his ow~n request."-Reuter.

SPLIT CAPTURED

YUGOSLAV SEAPORT IN - PATRIOT HANDS

News has reached the Yugoslav Government in London that Yugoslav patriot troops have captured the Adriatic port nf Split (Spalato).

Split is the most important Yugoslav seaport. It stands about half-way down the YtjgsIav coast. Partisans who hold the most northerly stretchl of coast between Susak and Zengg are also in possession of a long stretch of the Susak-Zagreb railway as far inland as Ogulin, on the inland side of the Kapela range. The town of Ogulin itself is now being attacked.

The Italian Bergamo Division surrendered to Yugoslav partisans. with all its equipment. Italians wishing to fight the Germans are forming a " Garibaldi Brigade." A German mnechanized division trying topiercetheYugoslavlines in an attempt to reach the coast suffered heavy losses near the town of Knin, 25 miles inland from the port of Sibenik. The Germans lost more than 300 killed ahd more than 500 wotin(ed. Two lorry loads of German officers commanding the column were ambtushed and wiped out.-Re-irer.
