COMMISSION
Sir Henry Beresford-Peirse, deputy director-general of the Forestry Commission. is being seconded for two years to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in Rome. He has been aopointed deputy director of the forestry division and will take up his duties next month.
Mr. James Macdonald. in the absence of Sir Henry Beresford-Peirse. will take over as deputY director-general. He will retain responsibility for the commission's research work. Mr. J. Q. Williamson, conservator Qf forests for South Wales, is to become a director at the commission's headquarter.

The quality of the stock at this year's Smithfield Show, which closed last night, was the highest since 1949. Mr. G. J. Yardley, secretary of the Smithfield Club, said yesterday.
He declared that the new mnethod of judging had proved an unlimited success. l'otal paid attendance at the show was iO,3)3.
