F rom the car industry in the Midlands to financial services in the City, the story is becoming increasingly famil - iar . Employers are reducing their workforces in order to become more efficient. This does not just mean cut - ting out "the fat" . Most of that went a long time ago. It means that individual workers need to work better, and be more adaptable, to produce higher output than they used to.
