Emrys Jones loved Oxford, where he passed all his working years as a deeply respected and distinguished scholar of English literature, teacher and critic. Emrys Lloyd Jones was born in 1931 in Hoxton and always considered himself a Londoner, growing up there to enjoy a great love and knowledge of the City, especially its churches. His parents had met there after leaving Wales, had married and had run a flourishing corner shop before retiring early to Kew. When war broke out, Emrys and his younger brother were sent to a relative in South Wales, returning home to London from Neath Grammar School every vacation. While in His teens, Emrys discovered the existence of Magdalen College and wrote to ask how one got there. A kind secretary explained and in due course his entrance papers were rewarded...
