Abstract :

The tiny deermouse was recently identified as the carrier of a new fatal hantavirus disease in the US Southwest. Mammologist Robert Parmenter had just documented a ten-fold rise in the deermouse population, due to an abundance of pinon nuts, its favorite food, brought on by heavy rains.
