Abstract :

Aim: To determine the sources of motivation problems among nursing students enrolled in a faculty of health sciences. Methods: The population of the study comprised 569 students. The sample group consisting of 449 students agreed to participate in the study. The data were collected by a questionnaire prepared by the researchers and the "Motivation Problems and Sources Scale (MPSS)". Statistical analysis, descriptive statistical methods (frequency and percentages), independent samples t-test and One-Way ANOVA test were used to evaluate the data. Results: The average age of the students participating in the study was 21.1 years, 89.8% of students were male, 98.0% were single, 86.6% were high school graduates, and 36.3% of the students' fathers and 12.2% of the students' mothers were college graduates. Intrinsic motivation subscales from the mean score of 24.19 [+ or -] 7.52, extrinsic motivation subscales of the average of 8.55 [+ or -] 3.15, negative motivation subscale mean score of 20.3 [+ or -] 5.10 and mean total score of 52.78 [+ or -] 11.79 were found. The distribution of scores analyzed on the MPSS for "the fear of making a mistake negatively affects learning" (X =3.27) and "the pressure of the people with whom I communicate affects learning" ([bar.X] =3.08) showed the highest averages of the negative motivation items. Also, while a significant difference in mean scores between intrinsic, extrinsic and negative motivation subscales was not found according to students' gender and parents' educational status, a difference in mean scores between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation subscales according to students' class status was determined to be statistically significant. Conclusion: The results show that while the students' average negative motivation subscale scores were high and that higher negative motivation levels were found when nursing students started their education, as the students continued their nursing education, negative motivation levels decreased and intrinsic and extrinsic motivation levels were found to increase. In line with these results, we suggest that students who choose the nursing profession be given sufficient guidance-counseling services in order to help eliminate negative judgments. Yontem: Arastirmanin evrenini Saglik Bilimleri Fakultesi'nde ogrenim goren ogrenciler (s=569), orneklemini ise arastirmaya katilmayi kabul eden ogrenciler (s=449) olustudu. Veri toplamada, arastirmacilar tarafindan olusturulan anket formu ve "Gudulenme Kaynaklari ve Sorunlari Olcegi (GKSO)" kullanildi. Verilerin degerlendirilmesinde tanimlayici istatistiksel yontemler (frekans ve yuzdelikler), bagimsiz gruplarda t testi ve One-Way ANOVA testi kullanildi. Bulgular: Arastirmaya katilan ogrencilerin yas ortalamasinin 21.10 yil, %89.8'inin kadin, %98.0'inin bekar, %86.6'sinin duz lise mezunu oldugu; ogrencilerin %36.3'unun babalarinin, %12.2'sinin ise annelerinin universite mezunu oldugu saptandi. Icsel gudulenme alt boyutundan alinan puan ortalamasinin 24.19 [+ or -] 7.52, dissal gudulenme alt boyut puan ortalamasinin 8.55 [+ or -] 3.15, olumsuz gudulenme alt boyut puan ortalamasinin 20.03 [+ or -] 5.10 ve toplam puan ortalamasinin 52.78 [+ or -] 11.79 oldugu saptandi. En yuksek madde ortalamasina ise olumsuz gudulenme alt olceginde yer alan "hata yapma korkusu ogrenmemi olumsuz etkiliyor" (=3.27) ve "iletisim kurdugum insanlarin yarattigi baski ogrenmemi etkiliyor" (=3.08) seklinde ifade edilen maddelerin sahip oldugu belirlendi. Ayrica, ogrencilerin cinsiyet, anne ve babalarinin egitim durumlarina gore icsel, dissal ve olumsuz gudulenme alt boyut puan ortalamalari arasinda istatistiksel olarak anlamli fark bulunmazken, sinif durumu ile dissal ve icsel gudulenme alt boyut puan ortalamalari arasinda istatistiksel olarak anlamli fark oldugu belirlendi. Sonuc: Sonuc olarak ogrencilerin olumsuz gudulenme alt boyut puan ortalamasinin daha yuksek oldugu ve ogrencilerin hemsirelik egitimine baslarken olumsuz gudulenmeleri daha fazla iken sinif duzeyleri arttikca olumsuz gudulenmelerinin azalip, dissal ve icsel gudulenmelerinin arttigi saptandi. Bu sonuclar dogrultusunda hemsirelik meslegini secen ogrencilerin meslek hakkindaki olumsuz yargilarinin giderilmesi icin nitelikli rehberlik-danismanlik hizmeti verilmesi onerilebilir.
