Education: Davidson College, A.B., 1965; University of South Carolina at Columbia, M.A., 1967, Ph.D., 1969. Politics: Independent. Religion: Episcopalian. Avocational Interests: Gardening, reading, squash. Military/Wartime Service: U.S. Army Reserve, 1965-95, including a period of active duty; became colonel; received Legion of Merit and Bronze Star.
