ATHENS, Greece, Aug. 17 (UPI) -- Unseeded American Mardy Fish upset fifth-ranked Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain in the second round of the Olympic tennis tournament Tuesday.

Russian Marat Safin, seeded ninth, also made his second straight early exit from the Games -- losing to Spain's Feliciano Lopez.

Fish, 22, is ranked 49th in the world. He was down a set and a break in the second before rallying for a 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 victory.

He pointed to an American flag in the stands as he left the court.

"There were a lot of Spanish people out there cheering for him," Fish said. "So whoever was cheering for me, I was pointing at them."

Lopez ousted Safin, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3. Safin was beaten in the first round in Sydney.

American Taylor Dent advanced with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 decision over Dominik Hrbaty of Slovakia.

On the women's side, top-ranked Belgian Justine Henin-Hardenne rolled past Maria Vento Kabachi of Venezuela, 6-2, 6-1.

Third-seeded Anastasia Myskina of Russia ground out a win over Puerto Rico's Rican Kristina Brandi, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4.
