Chinook mystery Lord Philip did not clear the pilots of responsibility as you claim ("Junior advised on Chinook verdict", News, last week). All he did was to conclude that the verdict of gross negligence should be set aside. At the same time, he concluded that the cause of the accident will never be known. That leaves the possibility that the cause was pilot error. Indeed there is evidence for that, which I pointed out to Lord Philip. Even so, the air marshals were justified in their verdict because the crew ignored the flight safety rules that applied in poor visibility. Defects in other Chinooks or Nimrods are irrelevant.
