General Ignacio Zaragoza General Ignacio Zaragoza (1829-1862) led the Mexican army to victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla, on May 5, 1862, a date celebrated in the Americas as Cinco de Mayo. Zaragoza died of typhoid fever shortly after this victory.
