Comfort counts during physical activity

Whether you want to make a fashion statement or you simply grab the nearest pair of sweatpants, putting thought into your workout clothes might just improve performance. First, choose clothes that allow you to move freely. You might be more comfortable in slightly loose-fitting clothes for walking, for instance. Next, when outdoors, match clothes to the weather conditions, especially in the cold when layering is crucial. Your first layer should wick sweat away from your skin. Special synthetic fabrics work best. Your second layer is for insulation and can be fleece, wool, or even another synthetic. Your third outer layer may be a wind shell for dry weather or, for rain and snow, one treated to make water bead and fall off. Consider clothes designed for specific activities. Yoga apparel should let you move through a full range of motion and give you coverage as you go into each pose. Outdoor apparel with a high ultraviolet protection factor, or UPF, keeps damaging UV rays from reaching your skin. Look for this information on hang tags for swimsuits and swim shirts. The right sports apparel makes you look and feel good, and that's worth a small investment of time and money spent shopping.
