About 6,000 million condoms may have been used in 1990. But, by rough estimate, condoms were needed in more than 13,000 million acts of sexual intercourse that risked unwanted pregnancy, AIDS, an/or other sexually transmitted diseases.
The public health challenge is to get condoms used every time they are needed. This task is not simple, easy, or quick. But it is urgent and important. Action is needed in four broad areas:
* Promoting condoms to the public,
* Informing and counseling people so that they use condoms consistently and correctly,
* Making condoms universally available at affordable prices, and
* Manufacturing more condoms as demand grows.
