Abstract :

A war of statistics exists relative to minority rights and the Balkans since the break-up of Yugoslavia. Numerous reports on the situation have been published in the late 1990s and in the past. Terminology of the reports is a problem. Greece is part of the situation because of the dispute between Athens and Skopje over the name 'Macedonia.' The Slav-speaking people in Greece are important in reports on the Balkans. Reported data on the number of Slav-speaking emigrants from Greek Macedonia to Bulgaria, 1912-19, are not valid. The size of the Slav-speaking population of Western Thrace in the early 1920s has been reported inaccurately.
