Abstract :

The critique of contemporary capitalism can be advanced through consideration of utopia and dystopia as tropes in Fredric Jameson's interpretation of Theodor Adorno in Jameson's 'Late Marxism.' Utopia and dystopia function as asymptotic axes for the arrangement of concepts in cultural critique. The dystopian trope has been relatively less developed, but can be found in Walter Benjamin's notion of the infernal, a theme and tone taken up by Adorno and Jameson.
