Abstract :

Latin American literature and philosophy are basically postmodernist and it may have been so even before this literary and philosphical trend achieved recognition. In the region, intellectuals belong to either the school that believes in 'essentializing discourse' or to one that deals with 'universalizing discourse.' The first school is based on the idea of resistance and a search for roots while the latter embraces such literary theories as structuralism and semiotics.
