Abstract :

One of the tactic used by French television films to portray illegal immigrants was the use of associations. Television images were made connecting immigrants to other concepts easily identified with illegality such as clandestins and race. During the so-called affaire des sans-papiers demonstration conducted by African blacks in the summer of 1996 a link between black and illegal immigrants was created, although efforts were made to separate black illegal immigrants from legal ones.
