Howard Thurman & The Disinherited: A Religious Biography. By Paul Harvey. Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, 2020. 244 pp.
When one considers a mystic, images of the detached theologian abound. The mystical is often popularly understood as divorced from the social and practical, as the mystic is often more focused on union with God than communion with human beings. Such a description does remarkable injustice to the tradition of Christian mysticism, but it especially fails to do justice to the work of Howard Thurman, whose mysticism was never far from his lived experience as a Black man in America. It is this reality that Paul Harvey clearly spotlights in his religious biography of Thurman.
