Abstract :

The dispute between Eritrea and Ethiopia on May 6, 1998, surprised many in both countries, but upon closer inspection, the quarrel between these regimes may make the situation much clearer. Both countries shared similar mix of ethno-regionalist/nationalist and Marxist-Leninist ideology. After they took power, their leaders were supported by the Western countries such as the US. They were viewed as the new style of African leaders because they were young and committed to democratization and a liberal market. However, differences did exist concerning opinions, approaches, and movements.
