Abstract :

The effects of two types of task instructions on listeners' performance on a voice sorting task are examined. The findings show that a change in task instructions, in which listeners were forced to sort stimuli into two identities only, helped unfamiliar listeners to overcome this selective failure at 'telling people together.' However, this improvement also increases errors in telling people apart.
