Heartburn, or pyrosis, affects millions of people across the world, and it is estimated that over one-fifth of the US population suffer from frequent and persistent heartburn, with the figure rising to over 35% in overweight individuals. A new study conducted at the Brown University, Providence (RI, USA) has implicated heartburn as a potential risk factor for contracting throat cancer. The research paper, recently published in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention , went on to suggest that it could increase the chance of contracting throat and vocal cord cancer by up to a staggering 78%.
