Abstract: Lactoferrin (Lf), a multifunctional glycoprotein, is an important antimicrobial and immune regulatory protein present in neutrophils and most exocrine secretions of mammals. Lactoferricin (Lfcin) is located in the N-terminal region of this protein. In this review, the current state of research into Lf and Lfcin in China is described. Searching with HistCite software in Web Sci located 118 papers published by Chinese researchers from 2011-2015, making China one of the top 3 producers of Lf research and development in the world. The biological functions of Lf and Lfcin are discussed, including antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, anticarcinogenic, and anti-inflammatory activities; targeted drug delivery, induction of neurocyte, osteoblast, and tenocyte growth, and possible mechanisms of action. The preparation and heterologous expression of Lf in animals, bacteria, and yeast are discussed in detail. Five Lf-related food additive factories and 9 Lf-related health food production companies are certified by the China Food and Drug Administration (CFDA). The latest progress in the generation of transgenic livestock in China, the safety of the use of transgenic animals, and future prospects for the uses of Lf and Lfcin are also covered.

Resume : La lactoferrine (Lf), une glycoproteine multifonctionnelle, est une importante proteine antimicrobienne et regulatrice de l'immunite presente dans les neutrophiles et dans la plupart des secretions exocrines des mammiferes. La lactoferricine (Lfcin) est situee dans la region N-terminale de cette proteine. Dans cette synthese, l'etat actuel de la recherche dans le domaine de la Lf et de la Lfcin en Chine est decrit. Une recherche realisee avec le logiciel HistCite dans Web Sci a identifie 118 articles publies par des chercheurs chinois entre 2011 et 2015, faisant de la Chine un des trois plus grands producteurs de recherche et developpement sur la lactoferrine dans le monde. Les fonctions biologiques de la Lf et la Lfcin y compris les activites antibacterienne, antivirale, antifongique, anticancereuse et anti-inflammatoire, l'administration medicamenteuse ciblee, l'induction de la croissance des neurocytes, des osteoblastes et des tenocytes et les mecanismes d'actions possibles sont discutes. La preparation et l'expression heterologue de Lf chez l'animal, les bacteries et la levure sont discutees en detail. The iron-binding glycoprotein lactoferrin (Lf) was first fractionated from cow's milk by Sorensen and Sorensen in 1939 (Sorensen and Sorensen 1939).
